Global Rainbow

is a large scale, spectacular outdoor laser projection created by the artist, Yvette Mattern. It consists of seven parallel beams of high specification laser light, representing the spectrum of the traditional seven colours of the rainbow, and is designed to be projected across large open sites, particularly densely populated areas. With the projection, the artist intends to encompass geographical and social diversity in its reach and symbolise hope.

Presented by amino for the first time in the UK Global Rainbow opens the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad year in three regions of the UK: north east and north west England, and Northern Ireland.

Starting on leap day, 29 February, the UK premiere of this stunning artwork takes place over five nights against the backdrop of the North Tyneside coastline.

From 8 March, International Women’s Day, the rainbow is being projected over the city of Preston for four nights. Here, it launches We Play Challenge, the north west’s Cultural Olympiad public participation programme. It is one of the first events in the Preston Guild festival. Dating back to 1179, this is England’s oldest festival and takes place once every 20 years.

Starting on 14 March and ending on St Patrick’s Day, 17 March, the rainbow is being projected from the base of the landmark site of Scrabo Tower. For four nights, it passes over Newtownards, from where it follows the picturesque eastern shore of Strangford Lough and on, over the Ards Peninsula

Global Rainbow was initially created for projection in New York City on 19 January 2009 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) where it was projected from the top of a Wall Street skyscraper in downtown Manhattan. The beams extended from Brooklyn Bridge to the east and the Hudson River to the west, passing over Ground Zero. Subsequently, it has been shown in Berlin, Toulouse, Utrecht and Nantes.

Yvette Mattern is a New York and Berlin based visual artist whose work has an emphasis on video and film, which frequently intersects performance, public art and sculpture. Her work has been exhibited in Berlin, Vienna, Dakar, New York, Venice, Rome, Chicago and Amsterdam.

    Yvette Mattern’s Global Rainbow opens the Olympic year projecting the spectrum of the seven colours of the rainbow from Preston across Lancashire to launch WE PLAY Challenge – the North West’s public participation campaign for London 2012 and the Cultural Olympiad. Yvette Mattern’s Global Rainbow is a spectacular large-scale outdoor laser projection artwork consisting of the seven colours of the rainbow which will span Preston across Lancashire from 8 – 12 March as part of the Cultural Olympiad programme. The people of Preston, Lancashire and the North West will be invited to sign up to WE PLAY – a once in a life time opportunity to make your mark on London 2012. Be part of a landmark installation and take an Olympic inspired journey across the region in 2012, culminating in the City of Preston over the closing weekend of the Paralympic Games.

Lightwave International rocks!

Lightwave International produced the lasers for the Global Rainbow in Nantes.

Lightwave will continue to present the Global Rainbow with me on upcoming shows we are developing for 2012 in the UK, Ukraine and California.

Le lieu unique présente Global Rainbow à Nantes entre le 9 et le 16 septembre 2011, pour marquer le début d’une saison placée sous le signe de l’innovation, de l’émerveillement et du partage.

Yvette Mattern, artiste portoricaine née en 1963, vit à New York. Elle travaille principalement dans les nouveaux médias (vidéo, film) qu’elle fusionne avec les arts plastiques, la sculpture et la performance. Diplômée de l’école des beaux-arts de Columbia University, elle a enseigné à l’université de Albany (New York). Elle a reçu de nombreux prix et a exposé à Venise, Rome, Riga, Berlin, New York…

Son projet Global Rainbow, a été conçu en résidence au Centre d’art contemporain de Varsovie en 2007. Il s’agit d’une installation laser monumentale : un arc-en-ciel horizontal composé de rayons lumineux représentant le spectre des sept couleurs de l’arc-en-ciel. Pour l’artiste, c’est une évocation de la puissance du phénomène naturel, mais également de sa confiance en l’être humain. Œuvre porteuse d’espoir et de tolérance, Global Rainbow fait également rayonner les environnements qu’elle traverse, mettant en valeur les lieux aux côtés desquels elle se trouve, ré-enchantant ainsi notre quotidien.

Global Rainbow a été présenté trois fois seulement à ce jour : en janvier 2009 à New York au moment de l’investiture de Barack Obama, puis lors de Transmediale à Berlin en 2010 pour les vingt ans de la réunification allemande et enfin au festival La Novela de Toulouse en octobre 2010 pour marquer les cinquante ans du laser.
